Being online means you are visible. You just never know who’s watching.
From a business point of view that is exactly what you want to achieve. You want to be found, you want your prospects, associates and clients to get to know you, to find out more about you and what you do.
There’s really no point in being a best kept secret if you are trying to grow your business is there?
It’s all about authenticity. Now that’s a word I use a lot in the context of my work for myself and for my clients.
“Authenticity concerns the truthfulness of origins, attributes, commitments, sincerity, devotion, and intentions.” source: Wikipedia
The authenticity must flow from your social media presence through your blog posts to your website. It must be there when you are contacted by phone, and it must be there when you meet.
If there is any disconnect at any stage, there will be a loss of trust.
For me there is no such thing as ‘work Alyson’, I’m just Alyson.
I show up, and I am the same online and offline, in my work life and in my personal life. What you see is what you get.
I’m like that because you never know who’s watching.
Anyway, I’m hopeless at role play, so how could I keep it up? I simply don’t know any other way to be.
I was reminded of this today when I was speaking to a new client prospect. Let’s call her Carol.
Carol emailed me last week when I was on holiday and I replied, making an arrangement to speak on my return. Carol lives far away from me, and we have no contacts in common. So how did Carol find me?
Well, Carol was referred to me by her business coach.
I don’t know Carol’s business coach, let’s call her Sarah.
It turns out that Sarah, the business coach, asked a Facebook group who they would recommend for social media management, and my name came up twice.
I don’t know who recommended me in that group thread, and I probably never will, but it just goes to show, you just never know who is watching!
So when I work with new clients I take time to really get to know them, what they do, how they behave, what their likes and dislikes are, what they read, where they go and so much more. Only then can I authentically represent them as a member of their inner circle, as a member of their team.
If we don’t feel that connection when we speak or when we meet, we simply don’t work together. I refer such prospects to other social marketing managers who might be a better fit.
